Dr Martin R Toynbee BSc MB BS DCH DRCOG MRGGP London 1979 Partner
Dr Toynbee qualified from St Thomas's Hospital Medical School in 1979. He went through the Mid Sussex General Practice Training Scheme and became a partner in this practice in 1984. Until 1998 he was based in Hurstpierpoint and then replaced Dr Tombleson in Ditchling when he retired. He was a GP trainer for 14 years stepping down in 2009 and also taught medical students. He has six sons from two previous marriages the eldest of whom will be graduating as a Doctor, in spite of his Father's discouragement.
 
Dr Richard I Cook MB ChB DCH MRCGP Birmingham 1989 Partner
Dr Cook graduated from Birmingham University in 1989. He worked in Australia and on the south coast before completing his GP training in Hurstpierpoint. Following this he travelled widely before returning as a partner with the practice in 1998. He enjoys the day to day aspects of the job and is the practice finance and practice based commissioning lead. He is married to Clare, also a GP, and they have three children to keep life busy and interesting. He enjoys food, sport, music, family life and more food.

Dr Simon Purwar MA MRCP MRCGP DRCOG London 1992 Partner
Dr Purwar trained at Oxford University and Guy?s Hospital Medical School, qualifying in 1992. He joined the practice in Hassocks in 1999, and he is the prescribing lead. He enjoys the outdoors and indulges in a number of sports including volleyball, cycling and swimming.

Dr Joanna Thomson MB BS MRCGP DRCOG DFFP London 1997 Partner
Jo qualified from Kings College School of Medicine and Dentistry, London, in 1997. She joined Mid Sussex Healthcare in 2002. She is currently on sabbatical leave in New Zealand, along with her husband Sean, an Orthopaedic Surgeon, and her 2 children. She will be returning to the practice in July. She has a keen interest in Women?s health and Palliative Care. She enjoys all aspects of General Practice, particularly providing continuity of care to patients and their families. Since living in NZ Jo has learned tennis and has taken up jogging (no marathons on the horizon just yet). She also loves gardening and when not at work is likely to be found in wellies with a hoe in her hand.
 
Dr Candida Lewis MB BS MRCGP DFFP London 1994 Partner
Dr Lewis qualified from Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School in 1994, and initially worked in London, before gaining a place on the GP Training Scheme at the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath. She joined the practice in 2003, after spells living and working in Cape Town and Christchurch, New Zealand. She has a special interest in women?s health, is married and has a young son. In her spare time she likes to run (slowly) and sleep.
 
Dr Hugo Wilson MB BS MRCGP DRCOG BSc London 1997 Partner
Dr Wilson trained at Guys and St Thomas? Hospitals, qualifying in 1997. After initially working in London he completed his GP training on the Brighton scheme and started at Hurstpierpoint in June 2006. He is a GP Trainer, supervising qualified Doctors in their final stages of training towards becoming fully fledged GPs. He is GP Training and IT lead for the Practice. He has been known to cycle along most of the South Downs way in one go and plans to tackle the whole distance one day. He is married with 2 energetic young boys who keep him entertained.
 
Dr Terry Lynch MBBS BSc MRCP MRCGP London 2001 Partner
Dr Lynch trained at Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School, qualifying in 2001. After working in London and Surrey he completed his GP training in Guildford before starting at Hassocks in July 2008. He is a GP trainer - supervising qualified Doctors in their final stages of training towards becoming fully fledged GPs. He is the education lead for the Practice. He enjoys outdoor pursuits and tries to keep fit on an indoor rowing machine. He is married and has 2 kids to keep him on his toes.

Dr Karen Hancock MBBS BSc(1989) St Mary's London DCH DRCOG DFFP MRCGP Assistant
Dr Hancock qualified at St Mary's Hospital London in 1989 and worked in a number of different specialities before becoming a GP in 1998. Her interests are women and child health and she has the diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology / Child Health and Family Planning. She has lived in Hassocks for over 10 years and enjoys being part of such a thriving diverse community. She has three young sons. When she does get some peace and quiet she enjoys painting ceramics and anything "Arty"!
 
Dr Helen Graham
Dr Helen Graham trained at University College London & Middlesex Hospital Medical School, qualifying in 1989. After working in London and Brighton, she became a GP partner in North Brighton. Special interests have included working in medical law & ethics, teaching at Brighton Medical School and working in Hospital Dermatology. Her work at Midsussex Healthcare started in November 2008 covering a partner?s sabbatical, and she is very much looking forward to joining the team as a partner from August 2010. She has a particular interest in Dermatology and is helping to set up a Community Dermatology Service linked with the Princess Royal Hospital. Dr Graham is married to a Brighton GP, they have three children and all enjoy walking on the South Downs with their Border Terrier. Having recently taken up running, she has just completed the inaugural Brighton Marathon.

PRACTICE NURSES


Practice Nurses
We have two practice nurses within the group. Their various tasks include general health checks, well person checks, asthma and diabetes control, travel advice and dietary and smoking cessation advice.

Practice Treatment Room Nurses
Nurses are available in the treatment rooms during every weekday. You may make an appointment to see the treatment room nurses if you require dressings, injections or treatment for sprains, cuts, etc. They perform blood tests, ECGs, etc under the direction of the GP and will always refer you to your doctor if they consider this necessary.

PRACTICE MANAGER and administration team


Practice Manager
Mrs Marjorie Spires is responsible for the overall smooth running and organisation of the practice. She will be happy to hear your comments, both good and bad. Her office is at the Hurstpierpoint Health Centre but she will be happy to meet with you at any of the surgeries.

Reception Staff
The reception staff will assist you in making emergency and routine appointments to see your doctor, undertake repeat prescriptions, answer numerous and varied questions and offer help and assistance at all times. It is a legal requirement that confidentiality of patient records is maintained at the highest level by all staff and a copy of our Confidentiality Policy is displayed at each of the Health Centres.

Community Midwife
A community midwife is attached to each of the surgeries. Please contact her as soon as your pregnancy is confirmed. She will share with your doctor in your antenatal care and arrange for you to attend parentcraft classes. She will also care for you and your baby after delivery.

Community Nurses
Community nurses are attached to the practice and visit patients who are confined to their homes and need nursing assistance. This may be arranged through your Health Centre or by ringing them direct on 01273 845932.

Health Visitors
Health visitors have a major interest in preventative care. They can give advice on health care, particularly for expectant mothers, small children and the handicapped. All families with children under five years old have a health visitor. They can see you at their regular Child Health Clinic or at any of the groups they run, or they may visit you at home. Their aim is to provide information and support to families on all aspects of health care and healthy living. They can be contacted by telephoning your Health Centre.

Community Psychiatric Nurses
CPNs are attached to each Health Centre, working partly with the GPs and as members of the community mental health team. They are accessed via the GP. The practice is also pleased to offer limited access to in-house counsellors.
